Productivity of local buffalo should be increased in an effort to substitute thecountinously increasing national meat demand. This study aimed to characterize the morphology of the local swamp buffalo covering a number of quantitative andqualitative traits in swamp buffalo from three subpopulations from Lubuk Sikaping, Panti and Nort Rao Subdistricts, Pasaman District, West Sumatera Province.
Research was conducted from July to August in 2009 through the observations on male and female buffalo with a total number of observation of 136 heads. Quantitative traitsobserved included shoulder height, hip height, body length, hip width, chest width, chest depth and chest circumference; while the qualitative traits observed included thepresence of horn, horn shape, skin color, leg color, the line of necklaces and whorls location. Differences in body measurements among suspopulations (subdistricts) ofswamp buffaloes were analyzed by one-way analysis test through a randomized block design model. Variation of qualitative trait was analyzed by the relative frequency calculation. Results generally showed that body sizes of the swamp buffalo from Lubuk Sikaping were not significantly different (P>0,05) to those from Panti, while the buffaloin Nort Rao had body sizes was significantly smaller (P<0 buffaloes="" in="" span="" than="" the=""> two previous locations. Charactreziation on the qualitative trait on swamp buffaloes observed showed a commonly characteristic swamp buffalo presented by some typical appearences such as having horns with the dominant form as a circle round, dark gray skin colour, stocking with striped double necklaces, posesing whorls mainly in the waistarea and shaped bowl.

Studi Karakteristik Morfologi Kerbau Rawa di Kabupaten Pasaman, Sumatera Barat
Upaya peningkatan produktivitas kerbau lokal baik secara kuantitas maupun kualitas perlu dilakukan untuk kebutuhan daging nasional yang terus meningkat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan informasi karakteristik morfologi kerbau rawa di Kecamatan Lubuk Sikaping, Panti dan Rao Utara, Kabupaten Pasaman, Propinsi Sumatera Barat. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Juli sampai Agustus 2009 menggunakan ternak kerbau rawa betina dan jantan dewasa sebanyak 136 ekor. Sifat kuantitatif dari ukuran tubuh yang diamati meliputi: tinggi pundak, tinggi pinggul, panjang badan, lebar pinggul, lebar dada, dalam dada dan lingkar dada; sedangkan sifat kualitatif meliputi: keberadaan tanduk, bentuk tanduk, warna kulit, warna kaki, garis kalung, letak unyeng-unyeng dan jenis teracak. Perbedaan rataan ukuran tubuh kerbau dari ketiga kecamatan dianalisis menggunakan analisis ragam satu arah dengan Rancangan Acak Kelompok. Sifat kualitatif dianalisis secara deskriptif menggunakan rumus frekuensi relatif. Hasil secara umum menunjukkan ukuran-ukuran tubuh kerbau rawa di Lubuk Sikaping tidak berbeda nyata (P>0,05) dari kerbau rawa di Panti, sedangkan kerbau rawa di Rao Utara memiliki ukuran tubuh sangat nyata (P<0 badan="" berbeda="" dan="" dari="" keduanya.="" kekecualian="" lebar="" lebih="" nyata="" pada="" panjang="" pinggul="" rendah="" tidak="" yang="">0,05) antar subpopulasi kerbau di ketiga kecamatan. Karakteristik sifat kualitatif kerbau rawa pengamatan di tiga lokasi menunjukkan ciri khas dari kerbau rawa seperti sebagian besar kerbau bertanduk, tanduk melingkar ke belakang, warna kulit abuabu gelap, memiliki Stoking, garis kalung Double, unyeng-unyeng terdapat di pinggang dan jenis teracak mangkok.
